Thoughtful Stuff

During May 2000 we had opportunity to visit the Boone County Court House in Madison, West Virginia as well as the West Virginia State Archives in Charleston, West Virginia.

Boone County, West Virginia Research Trip
May 2000

The primary purpose of the trip to Boone County, West Virginia was to continue trying to identify Jacob Conrad Edelman's naturalization request or declaration papers in an effort to determine a start point for detailing his life in the US from arrival to West Virginia.  This would of course help us go back in his ancestry to verify the information we have on his parents and grandparents.

We were not  successful this trip.

Boone County Court House
Madison, West Virginia

As to Jacob's Naturalization or other papers concerning Naturalization, we discovered last trip that someone has seen his specific request for naturalization and that such a document does exist in the court records after the Civil War and prior to Jacob's  entry into the West Virginia House of Delegates.  We had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Hager again (We mentioned her last time.  She has done an incredible amount of work in the records room).   Ms Hager once again helped us identify the oldest court records available for our purposes.  After going through the record books for the period just before, during and after the Civil War, we determined that the specific book needed was still missing and even though it might be somewhere else in the building, no one has any specific knowledge of it.  We plan to reevaluate what to do next and will let you know where we go and what we find at a later date.

Charleston, West Virginia

At the West Virginia State Archives we searched for members of Marshall Edward Jackson's family and in particular his parentage.

We ran into a serious block for information prior to the 1850 Census.  The Archivist, Debra Basham was very kind and helped us form a plan for finding his parents and for narrowing our search.  She helped us a great deal and we would like to publicly thank her in this forum.

Summary

The above information is not complete although we we obtained photocopies of many documents pertaining to our general research during this trip including copies of legal proceedings, photos, excerpts from books, etc. and which would be too voluminous to place herein.

The next trip is not scheduled yet but we hope to travel at least once more before this year is out to conduct more research.

Please direct any inquiry concerning this trip and the information obtained to WebMaster@edelman-rp.com.
