Boone County, West Virginia Research Trip
May 1999

During May 1999 we had opportunity to visit the Boone County Court House in Madison, West Virginia, the Kanawha County Court House in Charleston, West Virginia and the West Virginia State Archives in Charleston, West Virginia.

The primary purpose of the trip was to try to identify Jacob Conrad Edelman's naturalization request or declaration papers in an effort to determine a start point for detailing his life in the US from arrival to West Virginia.  There was also some hope that we would be able to identify other erroneous spellings of the Edelman(n) surname.

We were only partially successful as outlined hereafter.

Madison, West Virginia

As to Jacob's Naturalization or other papers concerning Naturalization, we discovered that such a document does exist in the court records after the Civil War but prior to his entry into the West Virginia House of Delegates.  We had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Hager who has done an incredible amount of work in the records room.  She is very knowledgeable of Real Estate as well as the older records.  She told us she remembered seeing the document we were hunting in the court records for that period.  She provided some very old records for us to review.  We (and she)  determined that the specific book needed was missing and might be somewhere else in the building.  However, a search failed to find it.   She was very busy and could not take a lot of time to help at that visit so we will have to return to see what we can find at a later date.

We discovered Jacob listed in the Boone County Land Book, 1866-1871, Table of Tracts and Land, 1871, under the name Eddleman.  Although we have considered it before, it occurred to us that part of the problem in tracing Jacob's trek from Maryland to West Virginia may be caused by a spelling of the Edelman(n) surname we heretofore have not considered.

We also found in the Grantor Index to Deeds, Boone County, West Virginia, page 10, Jacob's surname name spelled Edleman.

The Boone County, West Virginia, Chancery Records Book (Fall 1879), page 307, has the spelling of Jacob's surname as Edleman.

The Boone County Will Book 'D', pages 23-24 contains Jacob Edelman's Will reflecting his spelling of the surname Edelman.  In a visit to interview Mrs. Letha Kidd, Mrs. Kidd said the Edelman family dropped the last 'n' from the Edelman name meaning that Jacob's name when he arrived in the USA was probably EDELMANN. He was supposed to have traveled with his brother (or brothers) and a sister. The sister's name is believed to be Maria or Marie Edelman. His parents apparently stayed in Germany.

At the Kanawha County Court House we looked for members of the Bulmer family.  The visit was also to verify various birth and death records for Edelman(n) family members.

We were already aware that marriage records for Jacob Conrad Edelman and Letha Snodgrass were not found by previous researchers because of the gross misspelling of the last name as Edgeman (Kanawha County Court House, Marriage Register, Book 1 Page 17 (Facing), Line 26).

West Virginia State Archives
Charleston, West Virginia

At the West Virginia State Archives we searched for members of the Bulmer family and purchased a copy of Jacob Conrad Edelman's House of Delegates Photo.  It was copied from a composite and the copy you see on the Edelman Genealogy Report Page has been enhanced with photo software on the computer.  We have filed a permission for use with the State Archives as per their current protocol for use of the photo in this manner.

We also obtained photocopies of PROMINENT MEN OF WEST VIRGINIA,  Biographical Sketches of Representative Men in Every Honorable Vocation, including Politics, the Law, Theology, Medicine, Education, Finance, Journalism, Trade, Commerce and Agriculture.   The Growth and Advancement of the State as Shown in the History of her Distinguished Representatives, A Succinct but Comprehensive Statement of the Advantages, Resources and Development of the State, A Compendium of Returns of Every Election: National, State and Congressional, A RECORD OF EVERY STATE OFFICER: EXECUTIVE, LEGISLATIVE AND JUDICIAL, Illustrated with Numerous Portraits of Prominent Citizens of the New Commonwealth BY GEO. W. ATKINSON, LLD AND ALVARO F. GIBBENS, AM, PUBLISHED BY W. L. CALLIN, WHEELING W. VA. 1890, Page 675 where Jacobs Middle name is *** JACOB COONROD EDELMAN ***.  Family and other records all list his middle name as Conrad.   The surname is spelled however, Edelman.

In a copy of the 1860 and 1880 census records of Boone County, Jacob Edelman's Surname is spelled Edelman.  Other members of the Edelman family are occasionally spelled Edleman.

The above information is not complete in that we obtained photocopies of many documents pertaining to our general research during this trip including copies of wills, birth and death records, legal proceedings, photos, etc. and which would be too voluminous to place herein.

The next trip is not scheduled yet but we hope to travel at least once more this year for more research.
